Science and Technology

Status:	Active, open to new members
Contact:	Science & Technology Leader (Don)
When:	Monthly on Thursdays 2:00 pm Last Thursday of each month
Venue:	Café Bianco E Nero
Cost:	Coffee/Tea and cake

Please note our next meeting is on Thursday 26th November 26.

This is a friendly group where we watch science videos at home, then discuss them in a café over coffee and cakes. Some of the concepts are difficult but there is enough expertise in the group to help us understand.

For our next meeting, we will be discussing these 3 programmes on iPlayer -

The Incredible Human Journey Part 4 - Australia.

Alice Roberts looks at our ancestors' seemingly impossible journey to Australia. Miraculously preserved footprints and very old human fossils buried in the outback suggest a mystery: that humans reached Australia almost before anywhere else. How could they have travelled so far from Africa.

The Future with Hannah Fry, Series 2 Part 1 - Superintelligence

Professor Hannah Fry explores the promises and threats of AI, considering the ways in which superintelligent machines can help humanity as well as the ways in which they can be a hindrance.

The Future with Hannah Fry, Series 2 Part 2 - Animal communication

Bioacoustics technology and AI have allowed scientists to not only decode complex animal sound data but also begin communicating with animals. While this may mean the salvation of countless animal species, the advent of inter-species communication could also have far-reaching risks for the ecosystem.

You don't need a technological background to join us, just an interest in things and how they work, how they are made and just knowing more of their history. Anyone is welcome to take part. If you’d like more details, please contact the group leader, Don, using the link above.
