This was a new venture for Paisley and District u3a. Members had expressed interest in having a short trip for Christmas markets. The decision was then made to offer a three day trip in November 2024 to Castle Howard with visits to York and Harrogate as well. It was for th
On our first day we went on a tour of Castle Howard. This year the castle was decorated with the theme of Alice in Wonderland. No expense was spared as we were treated to imaginary effects, moving images, a sound recording of Aljce, the Mad Hatter, and of course the white rabbit. We met an enormous Queen of Hearts resplendent in red and a lobster quadrill. The castle had Christmas trees and decorations everywhere with the best sitting at 27 feet in the entrance hall.
On Thursday we travelled to York and a chance to see the York Minster in all its glory, the city walls, the famous Shambles full of Harry Potter shops. There were loads of stalls at the local Christmas markets and the place was mobbed. Several members went to the Railway museum which holds a number of famous trains including the Flying Scotsman.
Our hotel in Harrogate provided live entertainment on both evenings and several of our group were up for a dance or two.
We finished the trip with Friday morning touring Harrogate. Many of us enjoyed their markets but also the many shops still open and flourishing in a true city centre, whilst others went to visit the Royal Horticultural Society's garden at Harlow Carr.
Everyone enjoyed the trip and are looking forward to future opportunities.
